Photography for Ancillary Products

For the photographs I will be using throughout my ancillary products, I will be using the photos I took for this purpose during the shoot for the music video itself. I chose to do this for several reasons, with the first, and arguably most important, being continuity. Through taking photos during the music video shoot, I was able to ensure that the lighting and general 'look' of the forest would be consistent between each of the products within my promotional package. Taking the photos alongside the footage for the music video also meant that several of the images are very similar to some of the shots from the music video, creating further cohesion between the products, making them more recognisable as being directly linked to each other.
I tried to take a variety of photos, using different shot types and angles, as well as varying the locations. Through doing this, I knew that I would give myself the largest possible selection to pick from when it came to picking which images I would actually use, reducing the risk of having to go back re-shoot them.
Taking these photos during the main shoot also guaranteed that I was able to have the same actor playing the ghost, allowing me to create continuity between my products through the use of the ghost as a visual motif.

Digipak Analysis & Summary

Summary of Digipak Conventions
  • The front cover of a Digipak commonly features the name of the artist and the title of the album in the top-left third. This is normally written in typography which stands out from the rest of the design as this is important information.
  • The cover image is often somewhat ambiguous but conveys information about the artist and/or the album itself.
  • The inside normally consists of three panels, with the disc being kept in a plastic tray in the middle panel, with the rest of the panels folding over it. The panels either side of the disc feature images which are cohesive with the overall design identity of the product and are relevant to the music itself.
  • There are two spines (one on each side of the product when folded) which should be identical and conventionally feature the title of the album, the name of the band, the product's catalogue number, and the logo of the record label.
  • The back panel of the Digipak should feature a large amount of white-space/empty space, so as to distract from the important information. This usually consists of a track-list, a barcode, as well as the copyright information for the product. On newer Digipaks, there is often interactive information such as websites and social media details.
